Sekhukhune Confirms Departure Of AFCON Winner

Sekhukhune United has confirmed the departure of Africa Cup of Nations winner Ali Badra Sangare, whose contract will not be renewed.

The 39-year-old joined the club from JDR Stars in July 2022. He featured in 24 matches last season across all competitions as Eric Tinkler’s side finished fourth. In total, Sangare played in 75 matches for Sekhukhune United across all competitions, securing 34 clean sheets.

Sangare also played for Uthongathi and Free State Stars. With the latter, he won the Nedbank Cup in the 2017/18 season, when they defeated Maritzburg United in the final in Cape Town. He was also a runner-up in the same competition with Sekhukhune in the 2022/23 season, when they lost to Orlando Pirates in the final at Loftus Stadium.

Internationally, Sangare has been capped 29 times by Ivory Coast. He made his debut at the age of 27 under coach Sabri Lamouchi in 2013.

He was part of Emerse Fae’s squad that won the delayed Africa Cup of Nations in February last year, defeating Nigeria on home soil. However, Yahia Fofana was preferred in goal, and Sangare did not play a single minute in the tournament.
