Coastal Collision: Physicality, Kit Nostalgia, And Springbok Selection Stakes Define Stormers vs Sharks Showdown

The DHL Stormers are expecting a fiercely physical South African derby when they welcome the Hollywoodbets Sharks to DHL Stadium this weekend, with Deon Fourie and Norman Laker both highlighting the intensity that traditionally accompanies clashes between the two sides.

The fixture will also see the Stormers return to their much-anticipated black “Men in Black” kit, adding another layer of excitement to what promises to be a bruising encounter.

For Laker, the Stormers’ defence coach, the return home after their two-match European tour could hardly have produced a bigger opening challenge.

“It’s a South African derby. Deon knows them better than me because he’s played them a lot more than me; I just stand on the touchline,” Laker said with a laugh.

“But being on the touchline, it’s always physical. It’s almost like Springbok trials; every single guy wants to be a Bok. So, yeah, we are looking forward to a massive game this weekend at DHL Stadium.”

Fourie, who has considerably more experience of South African derbies, echoed Laker’s sentiments and stressed the importance of matching the Sharks physically from the opening whistle.

“As you said, derbies are always a big game,” Fourie said.

“They’ve got really good players and players who can get them on the front foot, so I think physically we must be up there on Saturday. In any derby, it’s about that physicality from the get-go.”

The Sharks will arrive in Cape Town with confidence after their impressive victory over defending champions Leinster last weekend, setting the stage for another demanding contest.

Fourie believes that result will only add to the intensity of the encounter.

“I think it’s always special playing in a derby, especially against the Sharks as well,” he said.

“They will be on a high at the moment after beating Leinster at home this past weekend.

“It will definitely be a physical battle, and a lot of emotions will be involved,” Fourie added.

Adding further intrigue will be the Stormers’ return to the black kit, with Fourie joking about missing the original “Men in Black” era when he first joined the club.

“I just missed the Men in Black era when I started,” he said with a laugh. “Life goes full circle.”

The black jerseys have already generated significant excitement among Stormers supporters, and Fourie expects the return of the famous strip to create a special atmosphere at DHL Stadium.

“I think there was a lot of hype around the jersey when it was announced at the beginning of September,” he said.

“I think the public is quite keen to see us in the black jerseys again. It brings back a lot of history from the first time Men in Black played back then.”

With the Sharks expected to wear white, Fourie also saw the funny side of the unusual colour clash.

“It’s going to be a bit weird playing in black jerseys against the Sharks playing in white jerseys, so hopefully the crowd just shouts for the right black jersey,” he joked.

With Springbok-calibre players on both sides, the return of the Men in Black jersey and the Sharks arriving high on confidence, the Stormers know they will need to bring the required physicality from the opening whistle in what promises to be another uncompromising South African derby.
