“Bok Heavyweights & Set-Piece Wars” — Unbeaten Sharks And Lions Face Toughest Test Yet In SA Derby Double

Vodacom United Rugby Championship log leaders Hollywoodbets Sharks and third-placed 10bet Lions will be looking to maintain their unbeaten starts to the competition and remain in the top four when they hit the road this weekend for South African derbies against the DHL Stormers and Vodacom Bulls.
They face challenging assignments, however, with the Capetonians highly motivated after suffering a narrow 17-13 defeat to Edinburgh in Scotland last week, while the team from Pretoria will be looking to bounce back from their 26-22 loss to Munster in Ireland.
The Vodacom Bulls and 10bet Lions will kick off the action on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld at 13h30, with the Jukskei Derby followed by the Coastal Derby between the DHL Stormers and Hollywoodbets Sharks at DHL Stadium at 16h00.
The Jukskei Derby is expected to be a thriller, not only because of the rivalry between the two Gauteng-based teams, but also because both sides will be desperate to remain in the top half of the table early in the competition and give themselves the best possible chance of securing playoff places later in the season.
Adding further intrigue to the clash, the men from Pretoria are currently the competition’s highest-scoring team, having scored 69 points compared with the Lions’ 62. They also boast the better defensive record, having conceded 39 points to the Lions’ 45. Those statistics will undoubtedly boost their confidence heading into the derby.
The Vodacom Bulls will, however, not underestimate the 10bet Lions, who were in good form in South Africa last season, losing only one home game 60km away from Pretoria. They will also draw confidence from their 43-33 victory over Ivan van Rooyen’s team in this fixture last year.
Johann Ackermann’s team later avenged that defeat in Johannesburg, recording a comprehensive 52-17 victory and setting the scene for another gripping encounter.
The coastal clash between the DHL Stormers and Hollywoodbets Sharks is expected to be equally intense. The Durbanites, the second-highest-scoring team in the competition with 67 points, will face the tournament’s best defensive side, with the Capetonians having conceded only 32 points compared with the Sharks’ 44.
The visitors, whose returning Springboks made an immediate impact last weekend, will therefore need to be clinical in their execution to breach John Dobson’s strong defensive line and secure a third successive victory in Cape Town.
The DHL Stormers will also be aware that victory would provide a significant boost as they look to close the gap on the Hollywoodbets Sharks in the standings and potentially leapfrog them if they secure a bonus-point win.
In addition, JP Pietersen’s side will be wary of the fact that the DHL Stormers suffered only two home defeats last season, one of which came against the Hollywoodbets Sharks. On the other hand, the Durbanites won both meetings between the sides last season, giving them plenty of confidence heading into Saturday’s encounter.
The DHL Stormers will also welcome back a handful of Springboks, including Damian Willemse, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Cobus Reinach, Paul de Villiers, Wilco Louw and Deon Fourie, further strengthening their squad for the clash.
The Vodacom URC has also announced that it will support Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, with various initiatives being rolled out across the tournament. These will include match officials wearing pink armbands, pink on-field branding and other campaign activities.
The initiative will have particular significance for the South African teams following the recent news that Aimee Barrett-Theron, one of the country’s regular Vodacom URC match officials and one of its most experienced Test referees, is on a recovery journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
