‘Fast, Physical And Relentless’ – Pietersen Plans To Break The Stormers’ Cape Town Fortress

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen expects the aerial battle to play a decisive role when his side faces the DHL Stormers in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship derby at DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

While much of the focus has been on the physical contest between the forwards, Pietersen believes both backlines possess the quality, pace and skill to influence the outcome.

“Both backlines are talented groups, both very skilful, and both teams have speed,” Pietersen said.

The aerial contest promises to be particularly intriguing, with Damian Willemse, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Ethan Hooker and Edwill van der Merwe among the players capable of making an impact under the high ball.

“The technical aspect of the aerial battle will be a big contest. The Stormers and the Sharks play a similar game, with the aerial contest playing a big role,” Pietersen explained.

He also highlighted the threat posed by the Stormers’ back three, which includes Seabelo Senatla and Leolin Zas, and stressed the importance of reacting quickly when possession changes hands.

“For the team that loses the ball, it’s about how quickly you can react to set the defensive line. For the team that has the ball, it’s about how quickly you can move it in attack to expose the defence,” he said.

The derby also presents an important test for the Sharks, who struggled with their away form in the URC last season. Having opened the current campaign with two home victories, Pietersen’s side will be determined to carry that momentum into Cape Town.

The Sharks will also look to build on last season’s double over the Stormers, although they face a formidable challenge against a side eager to deliver in front of its home supporters.

Pietersen acknowledged the difficulty of winning away from home but views the fixture as an opportunity for his team to demonstrate its identity.

“The URC is a tough competition, and playing away from home is difficult. It’s an opportunity and a challenge for us to test our DNA and the way we want to play,” he said.

“We want to be fast, physical and relentless on Saturday.”

With the Springboks returning to domestic action, Pietersen believes supporters can look forward to a high-quality encounter.

“All the Springboks are back. That’s what the fans wanted, so it’s going to be an outstanding game,” he said.
