Mayo’s Belouizdad Stun Tau’s Al Ahly, Open Up Group C

CR Belouizdad kept Group C of the CAF Champions League wide open after a stunning 1-0 victory over defending champions Al Ahly at Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 on Friday.

The match appeared destined for a goalless draw until the 90th minute when Mohamed Khacef capitalized on a spilled shot by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy to score the decisive goal.

This crucial victory propels Belouizdad to second place in Group C with six points after four matches, surpassing Orlando Pirates by a single point.

Al Ahly, despite the setback, remains at the top of the group with seven points. However, the intense competition has intensified, with all four teams still possessing a realistic chance of advancing to the next round.

Pirates, who were previously in second place, have an opportunity to claim the top spot if they can defeat Stade d’Abidjan at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (18:00).

This marked the first defeat for Al Ahly in the group stage, a significant upset for the record 12-time champions.

For Belouizdad, who featured South African international Khanyisa Mayo in the starting lineup and throughout the match, this victory marked their second win in the group. Al Ahly’s South African striker, Percy Tau, was introduced as a late substitute, entering the game just moments before the winning goal was scored.
