Mamelodi Sundowns has released a statement confirming that they have received numerous inquiries from clubs worldwide regarding their players, as Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s matter has grabbed the world of football.

The club stated that it is “committed to continuing with these discussions to advance the interests of the players and that of the club, as well as the fulfilment of the objectives and interests of all parties involved.”

This comes after Costa, in a letter obtained by Sportswire, confirmed that he had terminated his contract. The 26-year-old, who appears to be frustrated with the club’s stance, has taken the matter to the FIFA Football Tribunal.

Costa, who swept up the major PSL awards last season, including PSL Footballer of the Season and the Golden Shoe, has accused Sundowns of unreasonably inflating prices whenever an offer is made.

This was the case with an offer from Qatari club Qatar SC. There were also reports that Brazilian side Fluminense had made a bid for Costa.

Costa has not played for Sundowns since 25 July, when the team played in Orlando, USA. He is joined on the sidelines by teammate Khuliso Mudau, who is also having issues with the club.

In its statement, Sundowns emphasized its long-standing commitment to player development and financial stability. “The success and achievements of Mamelodi Sundowns over the past two decades have been based on its deep commitment to the development, growth and financial sustainability of the Club’s players,” the statement read.

The club added that it has always been its policy to “engage and negotiate with football clubs in Africa and worldwide that are interested in recruiting and acquiring the services of the Club’s players.” The objective, according to the statement, is “to advance the interests of the player and the Club, and to be fair and just.”
