KZN MEC Handover Of Combo Court & Outdoor Gym In Vryheid

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula, has underscored government’s drive to use sports infrastructure as a weapon against youth social ills.

Khawula delivered the message at Lakeside, Vryheid, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, where he officially handed over a new combo court and outdoor gym.

Strategically positioned between two schools, the community facility is expected to serve both local learners and surrounding residents.

Abaqulusi Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Sifiso Eric Mkhwanazi, joined MEC Khawula at the Lakeside Community Hall in Ward 22 alongside fellow municipal councillors and local leadership.

Khawula highlighted the transformation of the site from an illegal dumpsite into an active community asset.

“Today, we are here to officially open this combo court. As you know, this site was previously used for illegal dumping, but we transformed it into a multi-sport facility,” said Khawula.

“I am pleased because the department agreed to build the combo court, while the municipality has committed to maintaining it. It provides a clean, safe space where people can exercise, relax on weekends, and host events.

“We thank the municipality for their partnership, and we now urge the community to take pride in and protect this facility. We are grateful to see this project come to fruition.”
