Arrows Hit With Three-Window FIFA Transfer Ban
Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Golden Arrows has been handed a severe sanction by FIFA, receiving a three-window transfer ban for failing to pay former star striker Knox Mutizwa.
The ban prevents Abafana Bes’thende from registering any new players, both local and international, until the outstanding amount owed to the club’s all-time leading goalscorer is settled.
The FIFA Sanction: What This Means for Golden Arrows
FIFA confirmed the implementation of the registration ban, stating:
“In this regard, we wish to inform the parties that a ban from registering new players internationally and nationally has been implemented by FIFA on the respondent [Golden Arrows]… The registration ban will remain active until the amount due is paid and for a maximum duration of up to three entire and consecutive registration periods.”
The global football body has mandated the South African Football Association (SAFA) to ensure the ban is immediately enforced at the national level, dealing a serious blow to Arrows’ squad planning for upcoming seasons.
Mutizwa’s Departure and New Club
Mutizwa, a highly respected figure at Abafana Bes’Thende, left the club as a free agent before the conclusion of last season. During his tenure, the Zimbabwean international netted an impressive 63 goals in 231 matches, cementing his legendary status at the KwaZulu-Natal side.
Following his departure, Mutizwa signed with fellow PSL club Richards Bay in September. His move followed a suspension by Arrows for alleged misconduct, alongside former teammate Thabani Zuke, who also joined Richards Bay during the off-season.
Speaking about his exit, Mutizwa had previously stated his commitment to football:
“If anyone says Knox was fighting, that’s a lie. We don’t get platforms to explain ourselves.”
How Golden Arrows Can Lift the Ban
To have the severe penalty lifted, Arrows must immediately pay Mutizwa the owed compensation and provide proof of payment to FIFA. The ban will remain active until this is done.
The Durban-based side now joins a list of South African clubs that have faced FIFA sanctions recently, including:
- Richards Bay FC: Previously banned for failing to pay Abdi Banda (ban since lifted).
- TS Galaxy: Currently serving a transfer ban.
