City’s Disappointing Start, Rookies Shine In Motsepe Foundation Championship Opener

Cape Town City’s season got off to a disappointing start in the Motsepe Foundation Championship at Athlone Stadium on Saturday, while the newly promoted teams Gomora United, The Bees, and Midlands Wanderers collected maximum points this weekend.

Gomora United beat Leicesterford City, who were known as JDR Stars, 1-0, while The Bees won 2-1 against Baroka, and Midlands Wanderers beat Hungry Lions 1-0 at home in Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday.

Relegated side last season, City started the league very well as they played a disappointing 0-0 draw at home against Venda.

In other matches, the University of Pretoria played a 1-1 draw against Highbury, while Milford secured a narrow 1-0 win over the new side Lerumo Lions.

Upington City thrashed Kruger United 4-2, and Casric Stars handed Black Leopards a 3-0 defeat.

As per IDiski Times, the Limpopo side is reportedly to have played with 10 players, with defender Thendo Mukumela playing as the goalkeeper, as they couldn’t get their cards on time.

The second-tier South African football league will continue this upcoming weekend, with fixtures scheduled across three days.

On Friday, Casric Stars will host the KZN-based side Milford at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in a highly anticipated match, as both teams won their first games and had impressive runs last season, making this a game to watch.

On Saturday, Midlands Wanderers will travel to Mofori Mphahlele Stadium to face Baroka, while Hungry Lions will be facing Cape Town City at Mxolisi Dicky Stadium.

Highbury will travel to KwaNyamazane Stadium to face Kruger United, while Leicesterford will be visited by Upington City at Lucas Moripe Stadium, and Venda will be visited by Gomora United at Thohoyandou Stadium.

On Sunday, Lerumo Lions will face The Bees at NWU Mafikeng, and the last game will be between Black Leopards and University of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium.
