Erasmus Lays Down The Law Ahead of Springboks’ Brutal 2026 Campaign

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus completed South Africa’s final 2026 alignment camp on Thursday, expanding his player pool to over 60 athletes before naming his official training squad for June’s season-opening double-header in Gqeberha.

The camp, which began in Cape Town on Tuesday, featured a series of boardroom sessions led by the coaching staff to ensure the players were aligned on structures and systems. The squad also completed a gym session before wrapping up proceedings with a visit to South African Rugby Union House on Thursday.

“Every year after an alignment camp, we say we are happy with where we are currently, but I guess it will only become clear when we start playing,” said Erasmus.

“What we’ve tried to do with the alignment camps is bring in young players who haven’t been part of our system before, as well as others who have only attended one or two camps. In that sense, the players are starting to feel more comfortable. They also had the opportunity to get to know the coaches and understand the structures a little better.

“There were also injured players who could not attend, while some players joined virtually, so there were different objectives for the camp, but we believe most of them were achieved. That said, it’s easy to talk now — obviously it has to translate onto the field.”

Erasmus added that the wider player group had now been exposed to the national setup.

“I think more than 60 players attended the two alignment camps, so in terms of casting the net wide and ensuring everyone received a fair opportunity, we feel that has been achieved.

“Then there are the on-field aspects, where some players may still be involved with their clubs, while others will be arriving from overseas. But generally, I believe we are in a good place as a group, and everyone understands what is expected when we begin training.”

Erasmus is expected to announce his training squad for next month’s camp within the next two weeks, as the Boks begin preparations for the season-opening double-header featuring the Springboks against the Barbarian F.C. and an SA ‘A’ side against Zimbabwe in Gqeberha on Saturday, 20 June.

That will be followed by three consecutive Test matches against England national rugby union team in Johannesburg on 4 July, Scotland national rugby union team in Pretoria on 11 July, and Wales national rugby union team in Durban on 18 July as part of the Nations Championship.

The Springboks will then face Argentina in Buenos Aires on 8 August before taking on the New Zealand national rugby union team in four Tests during the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series in August and September.

The Boks will conclude their campaign with a trip to Australia to face Australia in Perth on 27 September, before the second leg of the Nations Championship begins in Europe with fixtures against Italy on 7 November, France on 13 November, and Ireland on 21 November, ahead of the Finals Weekend in London from 27 to 29 November.
