French Club Confirm Signing Of Stormers Lock

In news that could stump Cape Town rugby fans, French Top 14 club Montpellier Herault have confirmed the acquisition of Stormers lock Ruben Van Heerden from the 2026/2027 season via their social media account. 

The confirmation of the signing comes after reports in August 2025 that Van Heerden had a verbal agreement to join the French club after the conclusion of the 2025/2026 Vodacom United Rugby Championship season, according to Rapport. 

Montpellier currently find themselves in fourth spot on the prestigious French Top 14 table having won the competition in 2022 when they defeated Castres Olympique 29-10 in the final. 

Van Heerden has been part of the Stormers setup since 2022 and the Alberton born lock, a product of Affies in Pretoria, also represented SA Schools and the Junior Springboks. 

According to the social media post by Montpellier Herault, Van Heerden will don their colours until 2029.
