Kwinika Credits Team Structure For Fine Form

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika has attributed his impressive performances this season to improved team structure and better support from teammates rather than individual brilliance alone.

The 32-year-old centre back has emerged as one of Amakhosi’s most consistent performers in the current campaign, winning back the admiration of supporters who had previously questioned his reliability.

In the previous three seasons, Kwinika endured criticism from sections of the fanbase due to costly mistakes during his limited game time. However, this season has marked a remarkable turnaround.

Kwinika has featured in almost every match across all competitions for the Phefeni Glamour Boys, playing a pivotal role in a defensive unit that has become the envy of the league.

Chiefs remain the only side to have conceded fewer goals as they’ve just conceded six goals in the Betway Premiership so far this season. The 2025 Nedbank Cup champions have also registered 11 clean sheets in 15 league matches, with Kwinika a mainstay at the heart of defence.

Reflecting on the reasons behind his resurgence, Kwinika was quick to deflect personal praise and instead highlighted the collective effort.

“In this game of football, credit alone doesn’t work,” Kwinika said.

“I always say it is not always about me, and probably at other times, whatever we were doing as a group was not working well for me. But maybe now whoever is around me is complimenting me to arrive at my level.

“So, I’ve been doing what I’ve been doing before. I think the change in the structure of the team is what is complementing me, and maybe I’m able to show my talent better.”

The former Stellenbosch defender has formed solid partnerships with three different centre-backs this season – Inacio Miguel, Aden McCarthy, and Given Msimango – demonstrating adaptability and leadership in the Chiefs’ backline.

With his contract set to expire on 30 June 2026, after Chiefs exercised the one-year option on the three-year deal he signed upon returning to Naturena in June 2022, attention has also turned to his future at the club. Addressing speculation about a possible renewal, Kwinika remained measured.

“No, regarding that (contract renewal), I will speak to Bra K (Kaizer Motaung Jnr),” he added.

“Probably after that, we will have something to speak about. My agent (Basia Michaels) and I are waiting, and we shall see what happens.”

Kwinika will have another opportunity to underline his value when Chiefs host his former side, Stellenbosch, at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.

The 2021/22 Stellies’ Player of the Season will not only be eager to maintain his outstanding form but also to impress the club’s management and technical team as discussions about his future loom.
