Springbok Prop Ntlabakanye Sidelined After Adverse Drug Test Finding

SA Rugby has confirmed that Springbok prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye received an “adverse analytical finding” from a drug test conducted by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS).
As a result, he will not be considered for the upcoming Rugby Championship matches against New Zealand.
SA Rugby’s Statement and Ntlabakanye’s Position
SA Rugby released a statement clarifying the situation, noting that Ntlabakanye is disputing the anti-doping violation. According to the organization, the substance for which he tested positive was a non-performance-enhancing drug prescribed by a specialist physician earlier in the year for medical reasons. Ntlabakanye reportedly took the substance with the approval and under the supervision of a medical doctor appointed to manage the health of professional rugby players.
The statement emphasized that the player was transparent in his declarations and followed proper medical procedures. SA Rugby asserted that he “acted in good faith” and “at no time did he seek to obtain an unfair advantage.”
Implications and Future Steps
Ntlabakanye, who made his debut against the Barbarians in June, will now focus on defending his case. SA Rugby also confirmed that neither the player nor coach Rassie Erasmus will be available for comment until the SAIDS process is finalized.
