Stormers Sink In Wales As Wide Channel Deficits Exposed Again

The DHL Stormers concluded both their regular season and European tour without a win after falling 22-16 to Cardiff at Cardiff Arms Park on Friday night — a venue where they are still searching for their first victory.
On a beautiful evening, with the low-hanging sun casting long shadows across half the pitch, what began as a promising start for the visitors quickly unravelled as a determined Cardiff side secured a play-off spot with a strong home performance.
Cardiff claimed a bonus-point victory, scoring four tries to the Stormers’ solitary effort, with Jacob Beetham crossing the line twice.
The first mishap of the evening came straight from kick-off when Ioan Lloyd’s restart failed to travel the required 10 metres.
The Stormers immediately capitalised on the opportunity. Within the opening minute, they earned a scrum on their own feed and quickly asserted dominance. By the third minute, another scrum produced a further penalty advantage.
The pressure continued to mount and, in the fifth minute, Cardiff captain Liam Belcher was shown a yellow card as the home side struggled to cope with the relentless pressure from the visitors.
A sixth-minute scrum yielded yet another penalty before the Stormers finally broke through in the seventh minute, with Adre Smith crashing over following the sustained early assault.
Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu — the tournament’s leading points scorer — added the conversion with ease.
Despite enjoying a one-man advantage, the Stormers were soon forced onto the defensive as Cardiff began making significant inroads into the red zone.
Cardiff tested the Stormers’ maul defence and, after earning an advantage, spread the ball wide to the backline. A well-executed cross-kick brought Beetham into play, with the winger evading Damian Willemse to score an excellent try.
Lloyd added the conversion to level matters at 7-7 after 17 minutes.
The Stormers barely had time to regroup before a familiar weakness from the previous week — their defence in the wide channels — was exposed again. Cardiff moved the ball sharply through the hands with slick interplay and intelligent movement, creating an overlap for Tom Bowen to finish acrobatically in the corner and complete a swift turnaround.
Although Lloyd missed the conversion attempt, Cardiff moved into a 12-7 lead.
The Stormers’ bright start began to fade as Cardiff battled their way back into the contest through the set piece, winning key scrums and capitalising on an unforced error from an inaccurate lineout throw.
The visitors managed to reduce the deficit through a Feinberg-Mngomezulu penalty, making it 12-10 after 30 minutes.
There were several more nervy moments for the Stormers as their defence fluctuated between desperation and brilliance, and were it not for a handful of Cardiff handling errors, the scoreline could have stretched further.
A half that had started so positively for the Stormers ended on a sour note when try-scorer Adre Smith was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle.
Moments later, Lloyd capped an outstanding first-half performance with a superb finish deep in the corner, brilliantly contorting his body to dot down before narrowly missing the conversion and extending Cardiff’s lead heading into the break.
HALF-TIME: CARDIFF 17-10 STORMERS
The Stormers struck first in the second half when Feinberg-Mngomezulu calmly slotted a penalty after Cardiff were penalised for offside, cutting the deficit to four points at 17-13.
However, the Stormers’ discipline again came under scrutiny as Cardiff capitalised fully on another offside penalty. The hosts moved the ball crisply through the hands before Beetham crossed in the corner for his second try of the evening.
Although Lloyd missed another conversion, his influence in open play remained outstanding as he provided the assist for the try, stretching Cardiff’s lead to 22-13 with 30 minutes remaining.
As the Stormers worked their way into the red zone, the presence of Dan Thomas proved crucial for Cardiff, with the flanker producing several key turnovers just as the visitors threatened the try line.
With momentum swinging back and forth, Cardiff did enough to keep the Stormers at bay, while the visitors failed to find the cutting edge needed to close the gap.
As the game entered its closing stages, Cardiff looked increasingly comfortable, with the Stormers unable to break through a disciplined and well-organised home defence.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu added a late penalty after the 80-minute mark to secure a losing bonus point, but on a tour that had promised much, the Stormers ultimately came up short, finishing winless as attention now turns to the knockout stages.
