Stormers Thrash Sharks In Six-Try Showcase At DHL Stadium

The DHL Stormers delighted a partisan crowd of 42,360 at DHL Stadium on a warm Saturday afternoon, securing an emphatic 39-22 victory over the Hollywoodbets Sharks with a commanding six-try performance.

The Stormers produced a display of confidence, composure and efficiency, dominating the Sharks across several key areas. In a fiercely physical contest, the home side combined aerial superiority with attacking flair and clinical execution to prevail in a clash featuring an abundance of Springbok talent on both sides.

Evan Roos was a late withdrawal as a precaution due to injury. JJ Kotze replaced him on the bench, while Deon Fourie provided loose-forward cover.

The Sharks looked to exploit the aerial game from the outset, but the Stormers dealt with the bombardment effectively.

After building momentum in attack and making inroads into the Sharks’ 22, the Stormers won a penalty at the breakdown and opted for the lineout. They set up a maul before moving the ball along the backline, with Damian Willemse finding Seabelo Senatla in acres of space to score the opening try of the match.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu missed the conversion, but the home side took an early 5-0 lead.

The Stormers gained the upper hand at scrum time as they sought to assert their dominance in the much-anticipated battle of the packs. Another scrum penalty followed, and this time the hosts opted to take the points, with Feinberg-Mngomezulu making no mistake to extend their lead to 8-0.

The Sharks responded well, winning a penalty of their own and, like the Stormers, opting for the lineout. They set up a maul and powered through the home side’s defensive wall, with Manu Tshituka finishing the move for a try.

Vusi Moyo missed the conversion, leaving the score at 8-5.

The return of Cobus Reinach, Damian Willemse and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu appeared to inject fresh energy into the Stormers’ backline as they searched for ways to breach the Sharks’ aggressive defensive line.

Their attacking ingenuity nearly produced a moment of magic from Senatla, only for his effort to be ruled out after his foot was adjudged to have been in touch.

The aerial contest and physical battle continued unabated, with neither side willing to give an inch.

Gianni Lombard, who came on for the injured Moyo, slotted a penalty from the halfway line to level the scores at 8-8. The opportunity arose after Zas was isolated following an attack by Zekhethelo Siyaya, allowing Andre Esterhuizen to win a turnover at the breakdown.

With Eben Etzebeth off the field due to injury and Matt Romao in the sin bin, the Stormers sensed an opportunity to capitalise and duly increased the pressure.

Two late tries in the space of five minutes, courtesy of Hacjivah Dayimani and Andre-Hugo Venter following powerful maul drives, saw the dominant Stormers head into the half-time break with a deserved 22-8 lead.

HALF-TIME: STORMERS 22-8 SHARKS

The Sharks’ struggles continued after the break as the Stormers picked up where they had left off, carrying their momentum straight into the second half.

Following another slick backline move, Leolin Zas spotted a lack of defensive cover on the blindside and seized the opportunity, finishing with a pick-and-go to score the Stormers’ fourth try.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu missed the conversion, but the hosts extended their lead to 27-8.

The warning signs were mounting as the Stormers turned up the pressure against a Sharks side in danger of losing its defensive structure altogether.

A devastating counterattack led by Senatla was halted only by Ethan Hooker’s determined defensive effort, which forced the ball over the try line. The Stormers were awarded a five-metre scrum and, despite desperate resistance from the Sharks’ defence, Dayimani powered over for his second try of the match.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu added the conversion to extend the Stormers’ commanding lead to 34-8.

The Sharks responded with tries from Romao and Phepsi Buthelezi, both converted by Lombard, demonstrating their refusal to throw in the towel and cutting the deficit to 34-22.

However, their fightback was halted in the 63rd minute when a dazzling attacking sequence saw Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Willemse, Ruhan Nel and Wandisile Simelane combine to slice through the Sharks’ defence.

The move culminated in a penalty that led to a maul, from which Kotze powered over the line to score the Stormers’ sixth try of the match.

The try effectively ended the Sharks’ resistance, with no further points scored as the Stormers saw out an impressive 39-22 victory.

The result will provide a significant confidence boost for the Cape side, who will be delighted with both their performance and their ability to overcome their coastal rivals after suffering successive defeats to the Sharks last season.
