Miguel Named New Chiefs Captain

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has confirmed that Inacio Miguel will be the club’s new captain for the upcoming season.

The captaincy position became available following the departure of Yusuf Maart, who has joined Austrian Football Bundesliga side SV Ried. Maart, who was instrumental in Chiefs’ Nedbank Cup victory last season, left a leadership void that Miguel appears set to fill.

Miguel had already taken on the armband during the club’s off-season camp in the Netherlands, a strong indication of his impending appointment. He also captained Chiefs last season in Maart’s absence.

The defender led Chiefs again on Saturday as they lost to Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup, another friendly match, on penalties, at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“The person who captained the team [today] would be our captain next season,” Nabi stated when asked by Sportswire during the post-match press conference in Durban.

Miguel, however, had a challenging outing in Durban, missing two penalties: one in the 84th minute that could have secured a win, and another during the subsequent penalty shootout.

The Angolan defender joined Chiefs at the start of last season from Petro de Luanda. The 29-year-old, who is under contract until 2027, has featured in 28 matches across all competitions, scoring four goals.
