Motaung JR: We Wanted Mayo Last Term

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Jr., has revealed that the club had been pursuing striker Khanyisa Mayo for a long time, even before his move to Algerian side CR Belouizdad last season.

Chiefs signed Mayo on Friday after he was deemed surplus to requirements at the Algerian club, despite featuring in nearly 50 matches during his debut season in North Africa.

Mayo had joined Belouizdad from Cape Town City in a high-profile transfer at the beginning of last season. In his single season with the club, the forward scored six goals and provided one assist in 41 matches.

“It’s no secret that we wanted to bring Khanyisa to Naturena before his move to Algeria,” said Motaung Jr.

“He has a proven track record in the league, and we believe he will add significant value to the squad this season as we compete in both the domestic league and on the continent.”

Motaung Jr. also added, “He joins a select group of athletes who’ve made their families proud by following in their footsteps. We are truly happy to have him here and wish him all the best.”

The 27-year-old forward, who hails from the Eastern Cape, is the Chiefs’ 11th signing this season. He is expected to join his new teammates at the club’s headquarters in Naturena early next week.

As the son of Chiefs legend Patrick Mayo, who won two league titles with the club, Mayo joins an exclusive group of players whose fathers also wore the famous gold and black jersey.

This distinguished list includes:

  • Chairman Dr. Kaizer Motaung and Kaizer Motaung Jr.
  • Eliakim Khumalo and Doctor Khumalo
  • Joseph Mkhonza and Siphiwe Mkhonza
  • Fabian McCarthy and Aden McCarthy
  • Ace Nkomo and Morgan Gould

Amakhosi are currently second in the league standings with 13 points from five matches, trailing Sekhukhune United on goal difference. Following the FIFA international break, they are scheduled to face Sekhukhune at FNB Stadium on 16 September.
