Chelle Explains Bench Altercation With Bafana
Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, has addressed the heated exchange between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana benches during Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier, citing the immense pressure of the game.
The incident occurred after Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos expressed his frustration over what he considered overly aggressive tackles from the Nigerian players.
Broos was particularly upset that his team received three yellow cards (Siyabonga Ngezana, Bathusi Aubaas, and Teboho Mokoena) while Nigeria only received one (Ademola Lookman).
As a result, Ngezana will now miss next month’s crucial qualifying match against Zimbabwe.
Chelle, who was appointed in January and remains undefeated in World Cup qualifiers with the Super Eagles, explained that high-stakes matches often lead to elevated emotions.
“Once again, this is a big game,” Chelle said.
“There is some stress, there are tensions. Sometimes you can say something badly, sometimes you need to make a fight, but not a real fight. You need to manage yourselves and sometimes that is difficult because of pressure. But this is football, this is normal because the two teams, the two benches wanted to have a decision with the referee and one of them is not agreeing with that.”
He added that the tension between two rival nations like South Africa and Nigeria is expected. “For a big game like that, because of the game, because of South Africa is playing against Nigeria, this is normal for me. We are focused on the game, trying to win, both teams were trying to win. So, I have no problem with that.”
World Cup Qualifying Standings
The draw was not favorable for Nigeria, as it temporarily moved them to second place in Group C with 11 points after eight matches, six points behind South Africa with two games remaining.
Benin has since taken the second spot after a 4-0 victory over Lesotho, bringing their total to 14 points after eight matches.
A single win for Bafana Bafana in one of their two matches next month will secure their spot in the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time since 2002. Although they played in the 2010 World Cup, they did so as the host nation.
In the African qualifiers, only the group winners automatically qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. The four best-placed runners-up will get a second chance via a play-off round.
