Broos Labels Foster “Lazy” In Panama Draw

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has issued a blunt ultimatum to star striker Lyle Foster, labeling the forward “lazy” at times and demanding a higher work rate following a series of missed chances against Panama.

Despite being Broos’ preferred choice to lead the line, the Burnley striker endured a nightmarish Friday evening at Moses Mabhida Stadium in a 1-1 draw with Panama.

Foster fluffed two clear-cut opportunities in the first half—first missing an open net after rounding goalkeeper Luis Mejia, and later firing straight at the keeper from an Oswin Appollis square ball.

The profligacy sparked a hostile reaction from the Durban crowd, with fans audibly booing the striker and calling for an early substitution.

The “Movement” Ultimatum

Speaking post-match, Broos didn’t hold back on his tactical expectations for the Premier League forward.

“For me, Lyle is a very good striker, but sometimes he is a bit lazy in the game,” Broos said candidly.

“I told him a few days ago that we need someone who moves more, to put defenders under pressure.

“In the first half, he did some moments, and in the second half, so much better. Lyle moves a lot, he is quick, and he is strong. He can be more dangerous than when he is waiting for the ball.

“I know he is strong also. When he gives the ball on the feet, he doesn’t lose so many balls, but this is not our game.

“We don’t play with someone in the attack; we will keep the ball and have players who play around him.”

Broos emphasized that Bafana’s system relies on fluid motion rather than a static target man. “We play football that requires movements, and also for the strikers.

“Again, Lyle was tired after 70 minutes. But I like more that he is tired after 70 minutes than angry or frustrated that he doesn’t move enough.”

The Shadow of Evidence Makgopa

Broos’ continued faith in Foster remains a talking point among the South African public. Evidence Makgopa, who replaced Foster in the second half, was the standout performer during the 2024 AFCON bronze-medal campaign while Foster was unavailable.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico less than three months away, the pressure is mounting on Foster to find his clinical edge. Mistakes of this magnitude in Mexico City on 11 June could prove fatal to South Africa’s knockout stage ambitions.

Bafana Bafana will have a chance to rectify their finishing when they face Panama again at DHL Stadium in Cape Town this Tuesday.
