Appollis Rescues Draw As Bafana Survive Panama Scare In Durban

DURBAN – Bafana Bafana faced a grueling World Cup litmus test on Friday night, battling to a 1-1 draw against a clinical Panama side at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

While South Africa dominated large spells of the encounter, Hugo Broos’ men were left rueing missed opportunities—most notably from Lyle Foster—while Panama nearly snatched a late winner after rattling the woodwork in the second half.

Zwane Returns, Okon Debuts

The headlines before kickoff belonged to Themba Zwane, who made his first start since suffering a devastating ACL injury against Congo in October 2024. His absence during the recent AFCON in Morocco was palpable, and his return to the “number 10” role provided an immediate spark, though it meant Relebohile Mofokeng began the match on the bench.

Broos also handed a senior debut to young defender Ime Okon, who partnered Khulumani Ndamane at the back. Notable absentees from the starting XI included US-based duo Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicago Fire) and Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota United), both of whom were rested due to jet lag.

First-Half Frustrations

South Africa started brightly in what was their first meeting with Los Canaleros since the 2005 Gold Cup. Oswin Appollis forced an early save from Luis Meja, while Lyle Foster intercepted a poor Martin Krug back-pass and rounded the keeper, only to find the angle too acute to finish.

Despite the pressure, Panama struck first. After intercepting a Khuliso Mudau pass, Cecilio Waterman fed Edgar Barcenas, who unleashed a superb strike past Ronwen Williams to silence the 2010 World Cup venue.

Bafana’s frustrations mounted as Foster was denied again just before the break by substitute goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, prompting audible groans from the home supporters.

The Fightback

The equalizer arrived just three minutes into the second half. Khuliso Mudau showed great determination to keep a stray ball in play, heading it back into the danger zone for Oswin Appollis to drill home.

The second half lacked the frantic pace of the first, despite a spirited “Mexican Wave” from the Durban crowd. Bafana survived a late scare in the 80th minute when Ime Okon lost possession to Jose Fajardo, allowing Cesar Yanis a clear sight of goal, but his shot cannoned off the post.

Final Verdict

A 1-1 draw is a fair reflection of a match where Bafana’s creative flair was balanced by Panama’s disciplined efficiency. The two sides will renew their rivalry at DHL Stadium in Cape Town this coming Tuesday.
