“I Was Shocked”: Chislett Opens Up On Surprise Fan Reaction After Soweto Derby Loss

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Ethan Chislett has described his Amakhosi breakthrough as a “learning journey” after a seven-month wait for his debut.

The Durban-born star is now targeting his fifth appearance this Sunday against TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium.

The 27-year-old, who joined Chiefs during the off-season ahead of the current campaign, endured a frustrating wait before making his long-awaited debut.

Chislett had to bide his time for almost seven months before finally getting his opportunity, which came in February against Stellenbosch. Since then, he has featured in four league matches, including a high-profile appearance in the Soweto Derby.

Reflecting on his journey, Chislett admitted that his progress has been gradual as he continues to adapt and grow within the team environment.

“For me personally, it’s been a learning journey,” he said.

“I got a chance in a game against Stellenbosch, and I still feel like there’s a lot more I can offer.

“But that will come with more game time and growing confidence.”

The Durban-born midfielder also spoke about his experience of playing in the iconic Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, where Chiefs suffered a 3-0 defeat.

Despite the result, Chislett’s performance earned praise from supporters—something he admits came as a surprise.

“To be honest, I was quite shocked to receive praise from the fans, especially considering the timing of everything,” he added.

“The Stellenbosch game led into the Soweto Derby, so it was only my second game for Chiefs. I had played about 65 minutes before that, so it was a big step up.

“It was an amazing experience. People explained to me how big it was, but I don’t think I truly understood the magnitude of the occasion until I got there and felt the atmosphere from the fans. I spoke to my girlfriend and my family about playing in that game, and it was an honour for me.”

Chislett will now be hoping to build on his recent appearances and continue gaining momentum when Chiefs take on TS Galaxy at the iconic FNB Stadium on Sunday, where he could feature in his fifth league match for the club.
