“Not Ideal”: Chiefs Stumble In Polokwane As Soweto Derby Looms Large

Kaizer Chiefs’ five-game winning streak ended Saturday following a 0-0 draw against Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Despite the stalemate, Chiefs remain on course for a top-three finish, which would secure qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Amakhosi are on 46 points after 24 matches, seven clear of AmaZulu, who lost to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Polokwane City, who have become an established top-flight side under Phuti Mohafe, are seventh with 34 points from 24 matches. The club continues to impress by consistently finishing in the top eight despite operating on a limited budget.

Rise and Shine came into this match following a draw away to Chippa United.

Chiefs, meanwhile, were coming off a 4–1 victory over bottom-placed Magesi FC at Peter Mokaba Stadium in midweek. They were aiming to extend their winning run to six matches with another victory at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, located just a stone’s throw from the main World Cup venue.

The result is not ideal for Chiefs ahead of next weekend’s Soweto Derby against Pirates.

Pirates boosted their momentum with a 3–0 win over AmaZulu at Orlando Amstel Arena, with Relebohile Mofokeng in fine form, as they climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.

Chiefs also lost the reverse fixture of this highly anticipated clash in February, going down 3–0 to Pirates at FNB Stadium.

Although Chiefs had won their previous five league matches before this draw, they will need significant improvement to overcome a Pirates side that is in strong form and determined to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the league title.
