Amakhosi Hold 10-Man Downs In Loftus Thriller

Kaizer Chiefs dealt Mamelodi Sundowns’ title aspirations a massive blow after fighting to a gripping 1-1 draw in their Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians entered the sold-out encounter aiming to build on their recent victory over Polokwane City and tighten their grip on the league crown. Despite dropping crucial points at home, Sundowns remain at the summit of the standings with 65 points—holding a narrow three-point lead over second-placed rivals Orlando Pirates on 62 points.

Amakhosi sit third with 48 points, three ahead of Durban-based AmaZulu, who were denied a victory over Golden Arrows in the last minute as both sides fight for a CAF Confederation Cup berth.

Astonishingly, Chiefs have turned into the ultimate league spoilers; this result comes just weeks after they held Pirates to a 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium to deny the Buccaneers maximum points.

Who Scored in the Sundowns vs Kaizer Chiefs Match?

Both heavyweights started the encounter at a blistering pace, but it was the visitors who struck first. Flavio Da Silva silenced the home crowd, calmly slotting Mduduzi Shabalala’s pinpoint assist into the right corner from the center of the box.

First-half injuries disrupted both camps. Sundowns were forced into an early defensive reshuffle when Keanu Cupido suffered a serious injury, forcing Grant Kekana into action. Amakhosi then suffered a massive blow of their own just before the interval, losing playmaker Shabalala to injury, with Gaston Sirino stepping up as his replacement.

How Did the Red Card Affect Mamelodi Sundowns?

The second half resumed with relentless intensity, and Sundowns finally broke through the stubborn Amakhosi defense. Brayan Leon found the equalizer from close range, turning in a precise cross from wingback Khuliso Mudau.

Shortly after drawing level, the Brazilians were reduced to 10 men when midfielder Jayden Adams received a red card for a second bookable offense. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sundowns successfully managed to absorb late pressure from Chiefs to hold onto the point.

With only a handful of games remaining in the season, the draw sets up an absolute grandstand finish for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership title.
