Maboe Withdrawn From Bafana; Moremi Called Up
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana squad due to an ankle injury, with head coach Pitso Mosimane calling up Orlando Pirates attacker Tshepang Moremi as his replacement.
Maboe sustained the injury during Chiefs’ goalless Betway Premiership draw against Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium over the weekend.
Medical scans conducted by Bafana Bafana team doctor Tshepo Molobi on Monday confirmed the severity of the damage, officially ruling him out of the upcoming international window.
“He twisted his ankle while playing for Kaizer Chiefs, and after undergoing a scan, he will be ruled out of the current camp and this FIFA window,” Dr Molobi said.
To fill the void, Mosimane has turned to Moremi, who earns a national team call-up despite contending with minor injury setbacks at Pirates in recent weeks.
Bafana Bafana launch their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign when they host Guinea at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
They will then travel to Egypt to face Eritrea at a neutral venue four days later, before wrapping up the elongated FIFA break against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt at Cairo International Stadium on 4 October.
