Siyaya Just Solved The Sharks’ Flyhalf Crisis

The Sharks may have produced one of their most complete performances of the season in their emphatic victory over Benetton at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday, but one of the biggest talking points from the evening was the emergence of young flyhalf Zekhethelo Siyaya.
Thrown into the number 10 jersey at just 18 years old, Siyaya looked anything but overawed by the occasion. Instead, he played with a calmness and authority that belied his age, seamlessly slotting into the role and steering the Sharks around the park with confidence and maturity.
It was a performance of ruthless efficiency from the home side, and at the heart of it all was Siyaya, whose combination of youthful exuberance and composed decision-making gave the Sharks fluency and direction in attack. Whether taking the ball flat to the line or distributing with precision, the teenager dictated proceedings with remarkable assurance.
For many watching, it felt as though Siyaya had been playing top-level rugby in the number 10 jersey for years, rather than making one of his earliest appearances in the role.
Coach JP Pietersen admitted that even he had been taken aback by how naturally Siyaya adapted to the responsibility.
“It looks like he’s been there for ages,” he said with a smile. “He’s only 18 years old and, yes, there were a couple of little moments, but I’m just so happy for the kid to go out there, express himself, and back himself.”
More than just his skill set, Pietersen believes Siyaya’s passion for the Sharks is what truly stands out.
“He’s a young man who absolutely loves the Sharks — you can see it in the way he plays,” he explained. “That passion drives the whole team. The way he fights for the jersey and gives everything in every moment is the beauty of his game. He answered my questions at 10 and showed that he can absolutely do the job there. I am so stoked for him.”
While the excitement surrounding Siyaya’s display is understandable, Pietersen was quick to remind everyone that the talented playmaker is still only at the beginning of his journey.
“We must remember he’s still just 18,” he added. “But today [Saturday], we’re happy for him because he showed what he’s capable of.”
The Sharks’ dominant performance also offered supporters a glimpse into what the future of the franchise could look like. After a difficult campaign plagued by injuries and inconsistency, the emergence of exciting young talent has provided renewed optimism within the squad.
“Everybody will ask where this team has been all year,” Pietersen admitted. “We’ve faced difficult challenges with injuries, and we haven’t been able to keep a settled team together consistently.”
Yet performances like this, led by emerging stars such as Siyaya, suggest brighter days may not be far away.
“Today [Saturday] showed the future of the Sharks,” he said.
“We’ve got exciting, young, and hungry players who want to take this union to another level. Then you’ve got leaders like Emile van Heerden and Manu [Tshituka] stepping up after coming through the ranks, while Phepsi [Buthelezi] has been outstanding throughout the season. It shows they can step into leadership roles and take the Sharks to the next level.
“It’s so exciting for the future, but we’ve got Zebre next week, so we hope we can deliver another strong performance.”
For Siyaya, the performance may prove to be more than just a breakthrough moment — it could be the beginning of a very exciting future in the black-and-white jersey and beyond.
