Broos Admits Trimming Bafana World Cup Squad Will Cause Heartbreak

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos admits that dropping six players from his preliminary squad will cause immense heartbreak when he unveils his final 26-man FIFA World Cup roster at Pretoria’s Union Buildings next Wednesday.

The Reality of Selection Heartbreak

The veteran tactician named a 32-man provisional squad on Thursday. He must now trim that list down by six names ahead of next month’s global showpiece. While Broos has tasted continental success, this marks his first time leading a nation to a FIFA World Cup—a reality that makes the impending cuts particularly painful.

“This is an exciting period for me,” Broos shared during a media event by Honor on Thursday.

“A few weeks ago, compiling the 50-man preliminary list for FIFA was easy. Moving into camp this coming Monday was slightly harder. But the most difficult task arrives next week when we announce the final 26 players. I know certain players will feel incredibly disappointed, but I have to make these tough choices.”

Broos will lean heavily on his technical team to finalize the squad before the deadline.

“I have a good assistant in Helman Mkhalele, so I think on Monday and Tuesday next week we will still have meetings together to make sure we have made the right choices.”

When Does the 2026 FIFA World Cup Start?

The 2026 tournament, co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States, runs from 11 June until 19 July. Bafana Bafana face the ultimate test on opening night, locking horns with co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on 11 June.

From an Abandoned Ship to Global Respect

The tournament brings Broos’ career full circle. He famously represented Belgium as a player at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, reaching the semifinals before falling to Diego Maradona’s eventual champions, Argentina.

Now marking five years in the South African hot seat since his appointment on 5 May 2021, the coach reflected on a journey that began in front of empty stadiums and skeptical sponsors.

How Did Hugo Broos Rebuild South African Football?

When the Belgian took charge, public faith in the national team had hit rock bottom. Broos systematically overhauled the setup, famously guiding Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—their first continental podium finish since 2000.

Despite a round-of-16 exit against Cameroon at the subsequent 2025 AFCON in Morocco, the team secured historic World Cup qualification, cementing their resurgence.

This is South Africa’s first qualified World Cup appearance since 2002 (excluding 2010 when participating automatically as hosts), emphasizing the scale of Broos’ five-year achievement.

“First of all, I’m happy, but most of all, I’m proud,” said Broos.

“When you can change things the way we have changed them in South Africa, then you are proud as a coach. And you are also proud of your players because they made it happen.

“As you said, there was nothing positive at the beginning.”

Broos attributes the turnaround to blockading outside noise and sticking to his long-term strategy.

I think the best thing I did was to stick to the plan. I never changed,” he said.

“Even when the criticism was very harsh, it was okay because I was doing things my way and I knew that, in the end, we would get results.

“We just needed a little patience, and you can now see the results. Not only in this country, but across Africa, we are respected again.

“Now we will try to earn that same respect at the World Cup.”
