Red Card, No Problem! Springbok’ A’ Starlets Run Riot To Dismantle Zimbabwe

South Africa ‘A’ delivered an imperious performance, with their evergreen youngsters leading the charge as they dismantled the Zimbabwe Sables 40-0 in a dominant display at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on a beautiful, sun-drenched afternoon.

The opening 10 minutes were marked by a series of missed opportunities for South Africa. SA ‘A’ asserted their dominance at scrum time and with ball in hand, leaving the Sables pinned back and scrambling as they were forced into a gruelling defensive effort.

In just the second minute, SA ‘A’ offered a glimpse of what was to come when Markus Muller fired a flat, bullet-like pass out wide to Zekhethelo Siyaya, who produced a superb finish in the corner. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the try was ruled out after replays showed his foot had brushed the touchline before grounding the ball.

Three minutes later, Siyaya was denied again. Lukhanyo Am gathered Yaqeen Ahmed’s clever chip behind the advancing defence before offloading to the winger, who crossed the line. However, the try was chalked off after Siyaya was deemed to have been in front of Ahmed when the kick was made.

Vincent Tshituka sliced through the Sables’ defensive line in the ninth minute but, with his brother Manu unmarked on the outside, opted to go it alone. The decision proved costly as a promising attacking opportunity went begging.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 17th minute when Ahmed stepped past a defender, spotted a gap in the defensive line and dived over for the opening try of the match. He added the straightforward conversion to give SA ‘A’ a deserved 7-0 lead.

Four minutes later, the Sables paid the price for a loose pass as they attempted to move the ball wide. A hospital pass left flanker Dylan Utete exposed, and a crunching tackle from Siyaya dislodged the ball. Muller reacted quickest, gathering the loose ball and racing away unopposed to score SA ‘A’s second try.

Ahmed maintained his perfect record from the kicking tee, slotting the conversion to extend the lead to 14-0.

On the half-hour mark, Haashim Pead’s growing influence around the fringes was rewarded when the scrum-half spotted a gap in the defence and sniped through untouched for SA ‘A’s third try of the half.

Ahmed added the extras to stretch the lead to 21-0.

With half-time approaching, the impressive Siyaya was forced from the field after being caught flush in the face by a swinging leg during an unfortunate accidental collision. The winger had been one of SA ‘A’s standout performers and was unable to continue. He was replaced by Jurenzo Julius.

HALF-TIME: SA ‘A’ 21-0 ZIMBABWE SABLES

SA ‘A’ began the second half much as they had ended the first, camped deep inside the Sables’ 22 and applying sustained pressure.

However, the 52nd minute produced the first card of the match, with Ahmed sent to the sin bin. Playing under advantage, the fly-half attempted an ambitious chip kick that he appeared intent on regathering but misjudged the situation completely. In the process, he collided with a Sables player in the air, leaving the referee with little option but to issue a yellow card, which was later upgraded to a red following review.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, SA ‘A’ showed little sign of slowing down. Nico Steyn, who had replaced the impressive Pead, continued to exploit space around the fringes and darted over for the fourth try of the game.

With Ahmed off the field, Luan Giliomee assumed the kicking duties and slotted the conversion with ease.

For all their effort, heart and physicality, the Sables offered little attacking threat, repeatedly undone by set-piece inefficiencies and handling errors.

As the match entered the final quarter, Imad Khan made an immediate impact from the bench, stepping past his marker and weaving through the defence to score SA ‘A’s fifth try. Giliomee added the conversion to extend the lead to 35-0.

Just seconds from full-time, Jaco Williams gathered a speculative clearance inside the Sables’ half and backed himself to finish in the corner for SA ‘A’s sixth try.

Khan missed the conversion attempt, but it mattered little as the young South Africans underlined that the future of South African rugby remains in safe hands with a commanding performance from start to finish.
