Polokwane’s Most Successful Coach Just Dumped ‘Rise and Shine’ For Gallants

Marumo Gallants have officially confirmed the appointment of Phuti Mohafe as the club’s new head coach.
Sportswire broke the news on Sunday that Mohafe dumped Polokwane City to take the reins at Bahlabane Ba Ntwa.
Gallants launched an aggressive managerial search following the quiet departure of Jamil Benouahi, whose frustratingly brief stint ended abruptly. Benouahi, who succeeded Alexandre Lafitte in March 2026, managed just a single match from the dugout due to a prolonged work permit battle with the Department of Home Affairs.
In his absence, caretaker boss Trevor Mathiane steadied the ship for 10 matches across all competitions, guiding the club to a 14th-place finish in the Betway Premiership.
Mohafe leaves “Rise and Shine” as the most successful manager in Polokwane City’s history. Since replacing Lehlohonolo Seema in December 2023, he consistently defied the odds by securing top-eight finishes across three consecutive top-flight campaigns.
While the move to Gallants likely offers a lucrative financial upgrade, Mohafe enters a notoriously volatile environment known for its rapid managerial turnover.
