“Never Any Panic”: Pieter-Steph du Toit Reveals the Halftime Fix That Saved The Boks At Loftus

Springbok stalwart Pieter-Steph du Toit insists there was never any panic within the South African camp despite Scotland drawing level at 14-14 during an absorbing Test at Loftus Versfeld, with the world champions relying on their trusted systems to regain control.

Scotland’s determined display threatened to derail South Africa’s momentum after erasing an early deficit. Still, the Springboks responded with a composed second-half performance to pull away and secure a 42-28 victory.

Du Toit admitted the squad expected a stern examination from the outset and was prepared for the momentum swings that unfolded throughout the contest.

“We knew before the game it was going to be tough, especially when it got to 14-all,” Du Toit said.

“So we prepared for it and definitely knew it was going to be a difficult game.”

Rather than allowing emotions to take over, the two-time Rugby World Cup winner said the players trusted the structures that have become the hallmark of Rassie Erasmus’ side.

“As I said before, we’ve got the system. For us as players, it’s about believing in the system and playing according to the plan we have,” he said.

Du Toit revealed that the Springboks identified several areas for improvement during the halftime break, particularly their defensive line speed, which Scotland had exploited in the opening 40 minutes.

“We came in at halftime and said, ‘Listen, there are some things we need to work on,’ and we worked on them.

“Especially our line speed on defence, which is something we struggled with a lot in the first half,” Du Toit admitted.

While pleased with the team’s response after the interval, the 33-year-old acknowledged there were still lapses that will need to be addressed ahead of next week’s clash against Wales.

“There were some holes we left open towards the end of the game, but that’s something we need to fix.

“There’s always pressure, and there’s always something you can improve.”

For Du Toit, maintaining composure and focusing only on the controllable factors proved crucial as South Africa weathered Scotland’s challenge before eventually pulling away to secure the victory.

“For me as a player, I just tried to stay calm and focus on the things we could control on the field.”
