Phili Out For Eight Weeks With Ankle Strain

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has confirmed a devastating squad blow, revealing that 21-year-old attacker Langelihle Phili will be sidelined for approximately eight weeks after sustaining an ankle injury in training.
The extensive recovery timeline puts Phili in serious doubt for the marquee Soweto Derby clash against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on 31 October.
Phili was a notable absentee from Amakhosi’s matchday squad during Wednesday’s rain-soaked 2-2 draw against Richards Bay FC at Princess Magogo Stadium.
The KwaZulu-Natal-born forward, who joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC following lengthy transfer negotiations, had built considerable momentum after scoring the opening goal in a 1-1 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns two weeks ago.
Supporters were surprised by his absence in his home province, expecting him to feature prominently, but Da Cruz clarified the situation post-match through an interpreter.
“Phili is bad news for us because he got injured in training, and he will be out for around eight weeks,” Da Cruz explained.
The 21-year-old winger has made three appearances in all competitions for Chiefs this season, registering one goal.
When asked for further details regarding the training incident, Da Cruz offered a concise update on the nature of the setback.
“It is an ankle strain, and he was alone when it happened in training,” Da Cruz stated.
Following Wednesday’s draw in KwaMashu, Kaizer Chiefs sit third on the Betway Premiership table with eight points from four matches (W2 D2 L0), trailing joint-leaders Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns by two points.
Amakhosi return to league action on 5 September, hosting Siwelele at Royal Bafokeng Stadium (20:00) as they target a return to winning ways.
