Stormers Prop Called Up For Argentina Test And All Blacks Series
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has called up prop Ntuthuko Mchunu to the national squad for their preparations for the one-off Test against Argentina and the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) series, as the team returns to Test action following a week-long break.
The squad assembled in Johannesburg on Sunday evening and resumed on-field training on Monday, where they were joined by Mchunu, who earned his fourth Test cap against Scotland during the Nations Championship earlier this month.
Mchunu’s inclusion increases the size of Erasmus’ squad in Johannesburg to 44 players.
Erasmus is expected to name his travelling squad for the Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires on Saturday, 8 August, later this week. The selected players and management team will depart for Argentina in two groups on Saturday.
The remaining players will continue their preparations for the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand under the guidance of a group of coaches, medical staff and management members at the team’s training base in Johannesburg.
Erasmus has previously done this before, famously utilized a similar split-squad strategy during the 2019 and 2023 World Cup cycles—sending an early wave of players overseas while keeping a core group at home to prepare for New Zealand.
Meanwhile, the All Blacks have announced the 44-man team to tour South Africa for the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry.
