“We’re Not Intimidated”: Young Sharks Flyhalf Relishes Leinster Challenge

Sharks flyhalf Vusi Moyo is relishing the opportunity to test himself against Leinster, insisting that the Durban side are focused on meeting their own standards rather than being intimidated by the defending champions.

The Sharks face a formidable Leinster outfit this weekend, with the Irish province boasting a squad packed with international experience. For Moyo, however, the challenge is one to embrace after he experienced playing against Leinster in the final game of last season.

“I played against Leinster last season, the last game of the season,” Moyo said.

“For me this week, it’s about taking ownership and taking confidence in what the coaches have prepared during the week.”

The return of several Springboks has also provided the Sharks with an added boost ahead of the encounter, with Moyo believing their presence brings confidence to the wider squad.

“With the Springboks coming back, you get that bit of confidence knowing that you are safe around the guys,” he said.

While Leinster’s quality is well known, Moyo insists the Sharks are not allowing themselves to become overly concerned with their opponents.

“Going into the weekend, we’re not really focused on what Leinster can do, but on what we can achieve,” he said.

“We’ve set a lot of standards for ourselves as the Sharks, and we want to meet those standards. So, yeah, very excited to go on the weekend and just take ownership of what the coaches have put out for us.”

Moyo’s selection also represents a show of faith from head coach JP Pietersen, particularly as the youngster continues to establish himself in senior rugby.

He believes the healthy competition within the Sharks squad has helped him develop, while also acknowledging the support he receives from more experienced teammates.

“With Coach JP selecting me into the team this weekend, it does show a lot of faith and trust,” Moyo said.

“Competition in the squad itself is healthy, and it keeps you on your toes.”

Moyo also highlighted the influence of Jaden Hendrikse and Siya Masuku, who continue to offer guidance even when they are not selected.

“With guys like Jaden and Siya Masuku, whenever they’re not in the squad, they still come through and help, giving tips on how to do some things,” he added.

The young flyhalf will also benefit from having experienced players around him.

Moyo says those senior players provide an important source of knowledge as he continues to learn the demands of professional rugby.

“During the week, you set goals for yourself, and those are the guys you don’t want to disappoint,” he said.

Moyo also recalled the role Andre Esterhuizen played around his Sharks debut, making his return to the team particularly exciting.

“Andre was next to me on my debut for the Sharks, and having him back is very exciting,” Moyo said.

Having been praised for his maturity by Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus, Moyo has shown that he embraces the challenge, trusts his preparation and is willing to take responsibility when the pressure arrives.

After bursting onto the scene towards the end of last season, this weekend presents Moyo with another opportunity to shine against formidable opposition and further underline his potential.
