Opentickets Platform Crashes As Pirates And Sundowns Fans Rush Online

Ticketing provider Opentickets experienced a widespread system outage on Friday morning as thousands of football fans attempted to secure tickets for next weekend’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sales officially opened at 10:00 AM, but supporters encountered server errors and broken checkout sessions almost immediately upon accessing the digital platform.
The overwhelming surge in traffic comes as no surprise given the profile of the matchup. Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have shared complete dominance over South African football in recent years, with Sundowns claiming continental honors in the CAF Champions League and Pirates securing an unprecedented domestic cup treble – all last term.
The digital bottleneck mirrors events surrounding the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, where high traffic similarly overwhelmed the online distribution network.
Neither the Premier Soccer League (PSL) nor Opentickets has confirmed when full platform functionality will be restored, but both entities are expected to issue a formal operational update shortly.
