Tinkler Resigns From Asante Kotoko Ahead Of Potential Betway Premiership Return
Former Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has terminated his contract with Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko with immediate effect.
Tinkler was appointed by Kotoko in July, having been without a club since leaving Betway Premiership outfit Sekhukhune United by mutual consent in April.
The former midfielder appeared to be enjoying life in Ghana, remarking on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa just two weeks ago that he felt safe in Accra, noting that—unlike in South Africa—no one tries to snatch your phone.
However, as the saying goes, a week is a long time in football. Tinkler has now stepped down from his post in Ghana, sparking speculation that the experienced tactician could be returning to South Africa.
His potential return comes at a time when clubs like Durban City are searching for a new head coach, having recently parted ways with Khalil Ben Youssef.
Tinkler previously managed the club from January 2019 to November 2020—when they were known as Maritzburg United—leading them to a seventh-place league finish and a Carling Knockout final against Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2019/20 season.
Tinkler brings a wealth of South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) experience, having also enjoyed coaching spells with Cape Town City (across two stints), SuperSport United, and Chippa United.
