Giliomee Double Fires Sharks To 41-Point Thriller, But JP Pietersen Left Concerned By Defensive Lapses
The Hollywoodbets Sharks ran in five tries to secure a 41–24 bonus-point victory over Welsh side Ospreys in their United Rugby Championship (URC) opener at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday.
Despite the five-point haul, Sharks head coach JP Pietersen will be concerned by his team’s defensive lapses after allowing the visitors to cross the line four times to claim a try-scoring bonus point of their own.
However, the afternoon belonged to star performer Luan Giliomee, whose magnificent first-half effort set the tone for a high-scoring, frantic encounter in Durban.
After early pressure from set plays, the Sharks broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when a slick passing sequence released flanker Nick Hatton down the blindside to dive over.
Shortly after, Manu Tshituka doubled the home side’s lead, finishing off a sharp break set up by Jurenzo Julius. Giliomee then produced the try of the match, slicing through the Ospreys defense and peeling away from his marker for a sensational solo effort.
Ospreys pulled one back less than 10 minutes before the break when Luke Morgan took advantage of an overlap out wide. The Sharks responded almost immediately as Litelihle Bester pounced on a loose ball following a break by Giliomee, dotting down to secure the four-try bonus point and extend the lead to 28–7.
The visitors refused to back down before half-time, driving the Sharks onto their own try line before Sam Parry crashed over from a set play to narrow the gap.
Ospreys came out with renewed energy in the second half, crossing through Sam Parry again shortly after the restart. However, Giliomee restored control for the Sharks in the 66th minute, completing his double before Siya Masuku added the conversion.
Iestyn Hopkins scored a late fourth try for Ospreys to guarantee a consolation bonus point, but the Sharks held firm to close out a 41–24 win—marking the first time the Durban franchise have played their opening URC fixture at home.
Meanwhile, the Fidelity ADT Lions survived a stern test at Ellis Park in the early kickoff, edging defending champions Leinster 27–26. Ivan van Rooyen’s side showed real grit to record a statement victory over the Irish giants, who now travel to Durban to face the Sharks next weekend.
