Springbok Stars Power Sharks To Historic Victory Over Leinster

The Hollywoodbets Sharks flexed their muscles at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday, powering to a 26–20 victory over Irish giants Leinster in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship.

The result marks two wins from two matches for the Sharks—a feat achieved only once before in franchise URC history, during the 2022 season.

For Leinster, who have won just once in their last nine visits to South Africa, the defeat capped a disappointing tour following last weekend’s bonus-point loss to the Lions.

Springbok Reinforcements Drive Kings Park Display

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen named a formidable squad for the clash, welcoming back several international stars. Thomas du Toit and Edwill van der Merwe returned to the starting XV, while Ox Nche, Eben Etzebeth, and Ethan Hooker provided elite firepower from the bench.

Despite Leinster entering the contest on a five-match winning streak against the Durban side, the returning Springboks added the composure needed to build on the Sharks’ opening-round win over the Ospreys.

Leo Cullen’s Leinster side struck first in the 17th minute when Robbie Henshaw pounced on a loose ball following sustained pressure inside the Sharks’ 22.

The Sharks responded through their set piece. After winning a scrum penalty via Du Toit, the hosts drove Leinster back, allowing flanker Manu Tshituka to crash over in the 26th minute to level the score at 7–7.

Momentum Shifts Before the Break

Two minutes before halftime, Leinster prop Thomas Clarkson was sent to the sin-bin after collapsing a scrum near his own line. Capitalizing on the numerical advantage, the Sharks spun the ball wide, enabling Lili Bester to cross the line and hand the hosts a 14–7 lead at the interval.

Clarkson redeemed himself shortly after returning from the bin, forcing his way over the line following multiple tight pick-and-and-gos. However, Caspar Gabriel’s conversion struck the upright, keeping the Sharks ahead at 14–12.

As the contest hung in the balance, Pietersen introduced his Springbok core. With 20 minutes remaining, Etzebeth, Nche, and Hooker entered the fray to counter Leinster’s physical defense.

A Sam Prendergast penalty briefly put Leinster ahead 15–14, but the lead was short-lived.

Etzebeth and Esterhuizen Deliver Under Pressure

Following a turnover in mid-field, Etzebeth broke through the Leinster defensive line. The Springbok lock offloaded to captain Andre Esterhuizen, who raced clear to score far the posts and restore the lead for the hosts.

Vusi Moyo maintained his strong kicking performance, slotting the extras to make it 21–15.

With two minutes remaining, Leinster made a costly error in their own half. An errant pass from Andrew Osborne fell straight into the hands of Edwill van der Merwe, who sprinted clear to score the Sharks’ fourth try and secure the bonus point at 26–15.

Osborne crossed after the final hooter to score a late consolation try for Leinster, trimming the final margin to 26–20.

In the day’s earlier fixture at Ellis Park, the Lions powered past Ospreys with a dominant second-half performance.
