“It’s More Mental Than Physical” — Xoki Opens Up On Psychological Toll Of Injury

Orlando Pirates defender Thapelo Xoki has opened up about the difficulties of dealing with injury, describing the experience as more of a psychological battle than a physical one.

Xoki has been sidelined since the start of the 2026/27 campaign after being involved in a car accident with coach Abdelsam Ouaddou following their match against Chippa United. He has since returned to training as he continues to work on his fitness.

The 31-year-old is among the senior players who have struggled for regular game time due to injuries dating back to last season. Despite his absence from the pitch, Xoki has continued to support his teammates from the sidelines.

The defender admitted that his prolonged spell on the sidelines has taken a psychological toll, but he remains grateful for the support he has received from the club throughout his recovery.

“Being injured is not only physical. It’s a lot more mental than the body,” said Xoki, speaking ahead of their MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

“First, there has to be that trust between the mind and the body. The mind has to trust what the body has to do for you to feel like yourself again. For me, that’s why I give credit to our physios. They were not only treating the body, but they were also counselling me most of the time.

“I also have to give credit to my teammates, who have never made me feel like I’m an outsider. They’ve never made me feel like I’ve been out for that long.

“I’ve always felt part of the team, and my contribution, even though I’m not playing, has always been appreciated. That helps in terms of making me feel confident, appreciated, and part of the team. So, for one, it’s a great feeling.

“But now we are playing a final. It’s not really about me. It’s about the team. It’s about all of us being ready and being ready to contribute to the team. I’m sure every guy in the change room is ready and willing to put in 100% for the club.”

The veteran defender is likely to remain out of the squad on Saturday as Pirates look to defend their MTN8 title.
