Springbok Star Faces Possible Sharks Contract Termination After Team Rule Breach

Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi’s future at the Hollywoodbets Sharks has been thrown into uncertainty as the experienced front-rower awaits the outcome of an internal disciplinary process following an alleged breach of team rules during pre-season.
The 35-year-old has been absent from the Sharks’ opening three United Rugby Championship (URC) matches, with reports suggesting that his continued unavailability is linked to an incident during a team-building camp at Bayala Private Safari Lodges in August.
According to reports, the incident involved alleged misconduct during an evening of socialising after head coach JP Pietersen had reportedly outlined the expectations players were required to follow ahead of their return to training.
Mbonambi, who has earned 82 Test caps for the Springboks and won two Rugby World Cups, allegedly continued socialising into Wednesday morning despite the instructions given to the squad.
Fellow Sharks players Trevor Nyakane, Fez Mbatha and Eduan Swart were also reportedly implicated in the incident. Mbatha and Swart are understood to have received written warnings following their respective disciplinary processes, while Nyakane’s circumstances reportedly differed because he was not present when Pietersen communicated the team rules.
Mbonambi’s case, however, has taken considerably longer to resolve, with a ruling from the presiding officer reportedly expected within the next two weeks.
The outcome could have significant implications for the veteran hooker’s future at the Durban-based club. Reports suggest that the Sharks could consider terminating his contract if he is found guilty of serious misconduct, although no final decision has been announced.
The Sharks have remained tight-lipped about the matter, with Pietersen declining to elaborate on the hooker’s continued absence when questioned by the media.
“Bongi is obviously not available. There is no comment on Bongi,” Pietersen said when asked about the player’s status.
The coach’s response has done little to clarify the situation surrounding one of the club’s most experienced players, particularly as the Sharks navigate the opening stages of their URC campaign.
The club has also declined to comment publicly on the disciplinary proceedings while the matter remains unresolved.
Although Mbonambi has previously been managing injuries, recent reports suggest that his current absence is related to the disciplinary process rather than his physical condition.
Mbonambi’s Springbok future also in focus
Beyond his immediate future in Durban, the situation could affect Mbonambi’s hopes of returning to the Springbok setup ahead of the November international fixtures.
South Africa are preparing for a demanding international schedule that includes encounters against Italy, Ireland and France. Mbonambi will need to return to competitive action and demonstrate his match fitness if he hopes to strengthen his case for selection.
At 35, the hooker remains one of South Africa’s most experienced players in his position, having played an important role in the Springboks’ successful Rugby World Cup campaigns in 2019 and 2023.
His experience at the highest level has made him an important figure in South African rugby, particularly given his contributions to the national team during two World Cup-winning campaigns.
However, any potential return to the Springbok squad will depend on several factors, including his availability, match fitness and performances, as well as the decisions of the national coaching staff.
Mbonambi last played for the Sharks on 17 January 2026, when they secured a 50-12 victory over Clermont in the Investec Champions Cup at Kings Park Stadium.
His most recent Test appearance came against Wales in Cardiff on 25 November last year.
Sharks await disciplinary outcome
For the Sharks, the immediate priority is to conclude the disciplinary process and determine the appropriate next steps.
Until a ruling is delivered, uncertainty will continue to surround Mbonambi’s role in Pietersen’s plans and his longer-term future at the club.
The situation represents a significant development for both player and team, given the hooker’s experience and standing in South African rugby.
While the disciplinary process remains ongoing, the allegations have yet to be resolved, and any potential consequences will depend on the findings and the club’s subsequent decision.
What initially appeared to be an absence from the matchday squad has developed into a potentially defining moment in Mbonambi’s career, with the outcome likely to influence his future at the Sharks and his prospects of returning to international rugby.
