“Stay Behind Us”: Under-Fire da Cruz

Under mounting pressure, Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has urged supporters to remain behind the team during a difficult spell, insisting that their overall performances remain positive despite recent setbacks.

Amakhosi’s turbulent season hit another low point on Friday when they were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup by Zambia’s Red Arrows in the second preliminary round at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Da Cruz entered the return leg under immense strain after a 1–0 defeat in Zambia. Chiefs showed signs of life when defender Bradley Cross headed home to level the tie 1–1 on aggregate. However, with no extra time played, the match went straight to a penalty shootout, where Chiefs suffered a 3–2 defeat after missing three crucial spot-kicks.

Amakhosi will have an immediate opportunity to offer their supporters a response when they host TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 at FNB Stadium on Tuesday.

Should Chiefs fail to secure a victory on Tuesday, da Cruz’s position could be in serious jeopardy.

Despite the growing scrutiny, Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. issued a detailed statement over the weekend acknowledging the fans’ frustration while confirming that the technical team retains the management’s backing.

Nevertheless, results must improve quickly, with Chiefs currently winless in their last five matches across all competitions.

“The fans must stay behind us. When you see the type of football we played against Red Arrows, it was very positive,” said da Cruz post-match. “We must keep going, and the luck will turn in our favor. In moments like this, we need our supporters behind us more than ever.”

Following Tuesday’s cup tie against Galaxy, Chiefs are set to host bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday—a high-stakes fixture where da Cruz will desperately need momentum on his side.
