AmaZulu Eye Top-Eight Finish with Crucial Chiefs Clash

With just three games remaining in the DStv Premiership, AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa believes a victory against Kaizer Chiefs is a crucial step in their pursuit of a top-eight finish.

Currently occupying the same 12th position they held at the end of last season, AmaZulu’s season has been a rollercoaster ride, with their top-eight hopes fading with each passing game. However, Mothwa sees an opportunity against a similarly inconsistent Kaizer Chiefs side.

“It’s going to be a tough game,” Mothwa acknowledged. “Chiefs have been up and down all season, so I expect a real challenge.”

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper reflects on AmaZulu’s previous failure to reach the top eight, using it as motivation for this season’s goal.

“If you can check since I came to AmaZulu I only played top eight twice, and missed once so I think missing out that chance of playing in the top eight may just be a way of saying can we go to top eight for next season,” revealed Mothwa.

He emphasizes the importance of action alongside ambition. “We can say we want to be there with words but also we have to put work on the field of play, so I think us finishing in the top eight is going to give us more boost and more courage to say we can compete for top eight next season.”

Mothwa confirms that the entire squad understands the importance of these final games, aiming to collect all nine points available. “They do know what’s on the table, especially with the nine points that are left. For us to finish in the top eight they need to put in the work. If they don’t want to finish in the top eight, they would just go home,” he stated firmly.

A win for AmaZulu would see them leapfrog Chiefs into the top eight with 35 points and two games remaining. Additionally, they hold positive memories against Chiefs in Durban, having thrashed them 4-0 in January last year under coach Romain Folz.
