Baroka Releases Six Players After Playoff Loss

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC has released six players following their failed attempt at promotion to the DStv Premiership for next season.

Baroka finished the Motsepe Foundation Championship in third place but suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Richards Bay in their final match of the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday.

Despite needing three unanswered goals to secure promotion, they were unable to find the net, despite promising performances from attackers – Kabelo Kgositsile and Sekela Sithole.

The released players are Tshiamo Paatje, Putco Khoza, Lehlogonolo Nonyane, Sandile Nyundu, Boalefa Pule, and Phelelani Shozi.

“Baroka Football Club confirms that the contracts of the following players will not be renewed upon their expiry at the end of the 2023/24 season,” the club said in a statement.

Next season will mark a third consecutive season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship participation for Baroka. They were relegated from the DStv Premiership at the end of the 2021/22 season, becoming the second PSL team to be demoted after failing to win a single away game.

The future of coach Morgan Mammila also remains uncertain. He was appointed after the suspension of Da Malesela following a 1-0 loss to University of Pretoria in the first match of the mini-league playoffs. In his three playoff matches in charge, Mammila drew two and lost one, with the final loss proving decisive for their promotion hopes.
