Broos Hints At Retirement U-Turn Ahead Of World Cup

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has fueled speculation regarding his future, jokingly admitting that his previous announcement to retire after the 2026 FIFA World Cup may have been premature.
Earlier this month, Sportswire revealed that the legendary Belgian tactician was reconsidering his exit strategy. While the tournament—co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico—was long expected to be his final act, Broos now appears open to extending his tenure.
SAFA Open to Extension
During a recent sponsor unveiling for Standard Bank in Rosebank, South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan confirmed that the association intends to engage with Broos. Despite the coach’s earlier claims that he would quit in June, SAFA is reportedly eager to retain the man statistically recognized as the most successful coach in Bafana Bafana history.
Broos’ current contract, reportedly worth R1 million per month, is the result of a five-year deal signed in May 2021. It is set to expire at the conclusion of the World Cup.
The “Beautiful End”
Speaking at a press conference at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Thursday, Broos addressed the rumors while preparing for Bafana’s friendly double-header against Panama.
“Maybe it was not a good idea [to say] that after the World Cup, I should stop my career as a coach,” Broos admitted. “I said before that it would be like that, but at the moment, I still have to decide. Let’s wait and see what happens in three or four months.”
Broos emphasized that his focus remains on a high-performance finish. “On the other hand, if I stop, I want to stop in beauty. That means we have to perform well in the World Cup. I will work as hard as I have over the past five years to ensure we get good results.”
No Succession Plan in Place
Sources close to SAFA inform Sportswire that the association has not yet initiated a succession plan. The leadership remains hopeful of a “change of heart” from Broos, especially given the immense logistical pressure of the upcoming World Cup.
Bafana Bafana face Panama at Moses Mabhida Stadium this Friday, before traveling to Cape Town to host the North Americans again at DHL Stadium on Tuesday.
