Chiefs Set To Learn Nedbank Cup Opponents As Title Defence Begins

Kaizer Chiefs will learn their opponents in the Nedbank Cup on Thursday as they prepare to defend the trophy they won last season.

The Last 32 fixtures of the Nedbank Cup will be confirmed when the draw is conducted on Thursday, with another exciting and memorable tournament expected this season.

The draw will feature 16 Premier Division teams, eight teams from the SAFA ABC Motsepe Regional Leagues across the country, as well as eight sides from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Chiefs lifted the Ke Yona Cup last season after defeating arch-rivals Orlando Pirates 2-1 in May at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Former captain Yusuf Maart scored the decisive goal with a left-footed strike 10 minutes before full-time in a sold-out final.

The victory ended Chiefs’ 10-year trophy drought, with the club’s previous silverware being the league title in the 2014/15 season. Their last domestic cup triumph before that came in the MTN8 on 20 September 2014, also against Pirates at the Durban venue.

Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup under former head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who has since been relieved of his duties this season.

Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze are currently leading the team as co-coaches until the end of the campaign. Their tactical approach will be put to the test as Chiefs aim to defend the title while trailing Betway Premiership log leaders Orlando Pirates and second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs are currently fourth on the log, but unlike Pirates and Sundowns, they have struggled to find consistency this season.
