FIFA Lift Callies Ban As Mthembu Returns To Pretoria Side

Sportswire has confirmed that former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker Siphelele Mthembu has returned to Pretoria Callies.

Mthembu is currently training with the Motsepe Foundation Championship side, having spent six months of his one-year contract with Baroka FC. During his time with the Limpopo-based club, he scored one goal in nine appearances.

Callies, who were eliminated from the Nedbank Cup round of 32 by Marumo Gallants on Friday, are now able to sign Mthembu as their FIFA ban has been lifted.

The ban, imposed on 27 November 2024, stemmed from the club’s failure to settle a debt owed to Ivorian forward Zeyatane Dramane Kouma. Kouma, who joined Callies last season, made only two appearances for the club.

According to available documents, Callies were ordered to pay R119,534.16. The club has since settled the outstanding amount.

This development allows Mthembu, who enjoyed two successful stints with Chiefs, to rejoin Callies for a second time under Italian coach Fabio Lopez.

Affectionately known as “Shaka Zulu,” Mthembu enjoyed a prolific season with Callies last term, scoring 11 goals in 30 appearances – his best-ever return in a league campaign.

The 36-year-old has also represented AmaZulu, Cape Town City, Golden Arrows, and Free State Stars throughout his career. Renowned for his back-to-goal playing style, he was a favorite of coach Benni McCarthy at both City and AmaZulu.

The veteran striker has achieved significant success in the PSL, winning the league title, Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout Cup, and three MTN8 trophies. He boasts an impressive record of 40 goals and 17 assists in 272 top-flight appearances.
