Grobbelaar Eager For Cardiff Battle As Springboks Chase Eighth Straight Win

As the Springboks prepare for their final match of the year against Wales, Johan Grobbelaar reflected on a successful five-week stretch that included notable victories over France and Ireland, as well as a tough encounter against Italy.

Despite the demanding schedule, the international rugby year culminates with a game against Wales at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, with the Springbok front-rower insisting motivation for the final test is not an issue.

“Wales is the last game of the year for us. There will not be any lack of motivation for this game. We’ll handle it with the same intensity as any other test week,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to some new combinations and new guys getting opportunities, and everybody will be 100% in.”

Wales have been on a poor run for some time and have only won two games the entire year. They have also slipped outside the top 10 in the World Rugby rankings. Against the All Blacks this past weekend, they played with flair coupled with fearlessness, but eventually ran out of steam and succumbed to a 52-26 defeat.

Grobbelaar acknowledged the quality in the Welsh side, especially after their strong showing against the All Blacks.

“They have some great players. They scored some beautiful tries. They have a good skillset at the back and a good attacking shape. They are also always a threat under the high ball.”

With many of the players from the Rugby World Cup champions camp returning to their clubs through obligation and due to this Test falling outside World Rugby’s Test match window, lineup changes are expected, and Grobbelaar may find himself alongside younger props; however, he sees no issue with adapting.

“It’s helped that we have trained together the last couple of weeks. We got to know the guys, even the younger ones that I have not played with, so I’m sure we’ll be ready for the battle.”

After an uncertain start to the year, Grobbelaar is pleased to have re-established himself, and his own personal journey has taken on a new reality.

“It’s been great. The earlier part of the year, I was out of the mix, then came back in. I’ve played four games now, so it’s great to get the opportunity to put on the green jersey again.”

Having experienced the stadium atmosphere last year, in the Springboks’ 45-12 win over Wales, which was incidentally, also the final game of the tour, he is eager to return.

“It was my first time playing at the stadium. It was a great atmosphere. We had lots of South African support, and we’re hoping to see them again this weekend.”

With Wales facing a similar dilemma to South Africa, missing 13 players due to club commitments, some might expect the contest to ease and are anticipating a lopsided affair – Grobbelaar, though, like his teammates, knows otherwise.

“Knowing the Welsh, they are a proud nation. The guys who will replace them will be quality players. It will be a full-on battle for 80 minutes.”

Club rugby resumes this weekend, while this remains the only international fixture. With Grobbelaar’s club, the Vodacom Bulls are enjoying a strong start to the season. The front row player hopes that momentum and familiarity will carry into Saturday’s test.

“The last few years we’ve played the Welsh guys in the URC, so there are familiar faces. I’m sure we’ll go up against them when we get the opportunity Saturday, so we’ll make the best of it.”

The Springboks and Wales will kick off at 17:10 SA time on Saturday.
