Justice For Gomolemo: Former PSL Star Pleads Guilty Over Fatal October 2024 Crash

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that former Sekhukhune United right-back Mokete Sean Mogaila pleaded guilty in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to charges stemming from a fatal October 2024 road crash.

Mogaila entered a written guilty plea under Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act, admitting to all facts presented by the State.

Conviction Charges

The court subsequently convicted Mogaila on three counts:

  • Culpable homicide
  • Failure to remain at the scene of an accident
  • Failure to render assistance after an accident

Background

The charges follow a collision on Andrew Mapheto Road in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, on 30 October 2024. Mogaila’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and struck another car, killing nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela and severely injuring her mother and 13-year-old brother.

Mogaila fled the scene before turning himself in to the police later that day. Following the incident, Sekhukhune United released the 29-year-old player from his contract.

Next Steps

The NPA welcomed the conviction as a crucial step toward justice. The court extended Mogaila’s bail and postponed the matter to 17 November 2026 for formal sentencing proceedings.

“The NPA has secured a conviction in the case of former professional footballer Mokete Sean Mogaila, who pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide and failure to render assistance,” said NPA Communications Officer Magaboke Mohlatlole.
