“Like Rugby League”: Dobson’s Explosive Warning After Fourie’s Season-Threatening Injury

DHL Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson has expressed grave concern over the knee injury sustained by veteran forward Deon Fourie during Saturday’s dramatic draw against Ulster.

Dobson warned that such incidents threaten the very existence of the breakdown contest, one of rugby union’s most defining features.

Fourie was forced off early in the encounter with damaged medial ligaments. The injury occurred during a controversial clean-out by Ulster captain Iain Henderson, who received a yellow card that was subsequently upgraded to a 20-minute red card upon review.

However, Dobson suggested the nature of the challenge warranted an immediate and permanent dismissal.

“I feel very sorry for Deon Fourie,” said Dobson. “That kind of incident has to be removed from the game, and the player responsible probably has to be removed for the entire match.”

The Stormers boss admitted the injury could have major consequences for both Fourie and the team, particularly given the influential role the veteran has played this season.

“Deon has damaged the medial ligaments in his knee, and we will have to see how serious it is and whether he can recover quickly,” he said.

Dobson stressed that protecting players competing for turnovers at the breakdown was essential to preserving the character of the sport.

“If we don’t remove those incidents from the game, there will be no room for turnovers and steals,” he explained. “If there is no room for steals, then the game becomes like rugby league.”

While clearly frustrated by the incident, Dobson stopped short of accusing the opposition player of intentional foul play and felt the officials handled the situation correctly.

“I don’t think a player deliberately wants to injure another player’s knee,” he said. “I think the referee probably got it right, but it is a big blow for us, especially considering the form Deon has been in.”

Dobson also praised replacement Paul de Villiers for stepping up following Fourie’s departure.

“Paul did a good job,” he added.

The Stormers medical team will assess the full extent of Fourie’s injury this week, but the veteran appears set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
