Jingling The Keys Again: Mosimane Broke The R10m Impasse To Reclaim The Bafana Job
The South African Football Association has announced the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as Bafana Bafana head coach during a press conference at SAFA House on Tuesday.
Mosimane’s return initially hit a snag as negotiations between his camp and the football association stalled over the past few weeks. However, Sportswire revealed on Friday that both parties were 90 percent close to finalizing an agreement for Mosimane to succeed Hugo Broos.
Broos—Bafana’s longest-serving coach after a five-year tenure—stepped down at the end of July following South Africa’s historic run to the FIFA World Cup knockout stages.
The prolonged negotiations centered around Mosimane’s technical backroom staff and commercial rights inclusions. SAFA initially offered an annual salary of R5 million, which Mosimane rejected. The SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC)—the association’s highest decision-making body—subsequently raised the offer to R10 million.
Mosimane again turned it down, as it fell well short of the R16.8 million annual package Broos received.
However, rapid progress over the last few days broke the impasse, paving the way for Mosimane’s second stint in charge of the national team.
Mosimane will assemble his trusted technical team, bringing back long-time collaborators performance analyst Muzi Matlaba and fitness coach Kabelo Rangoaga, who worked alongside him at Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly, and across the Middle East.
Mosimane’s immediate mandate is qualifying South Africa for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in East Africa. Bafana Bafana kick off their qualifying campaign later this month, hosting Guinea on September 23 before traveling to face 184th-ranked Eritrea four days later.
Jingles previously coached Bafana Bafana between July 2010 and June 2012, recording 11 wins, eight draws, and five losses in 24 matches before his departure.
