Messi Retires From International Football
Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, has officially retired from international football.
The 39-year-old made his final appearance for La Albiceleste during Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19 in the United States.
That final appearance saw him play all 120 minutes in East Rutherford, New Jersey, before Ferran Torres struck the 106th-minute winner.
The former Barcelona global superstar led Argentina to ultimate glory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, defeating France in a dramatic final. He previously captained the national side to the 2014 World Cup final, where South America fell to Germany.
An eight-time World Player of the Year winner, Messi also won two Copa América titles during his illustrious international career. He steps away as Argentina’s all-time leader in both caps and goals, finishing with 125 goals in 207 appearances.
Messi made his senior international debut against Hungary in August 2005; his retirement closes a historic 21-year tenure representing La Albiceleste.
While stepping back from the international stage, the global icon will continue his club career in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, where his contract runs through next year.
