Lions Rugby Confirms Tragic Death In France

The rugby community has been left in mourning following the death of 10bet Lions lock Hyron Andrews while on tour in France ahead of the Johannesburg-based side’s Investec Champions Cup and Vodacom United Rugby Championship fixtures.

The Lions Rugby Company confirmed the devastating news on Friday, extending its heartfelt condolences to Andrews’ wife, Maiglin, their young sons, Hendrix and Emerson, and the wider Andrews family.

Andrews, a former Sharks and Sale Sharks forward, had recently joined the Lions and become a valued member of the squad. His passing has sent shockwaves through the international rugby community, with teammates, coaches, supporters and those who knew him grieving the loss of the lock.

Lions Rugby Company chief executive officer Rudolf Straeuli said the organisation was heartbroken by Andrews’ death.

“We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron. He was not only a gifted rugby player, but also a cherished member of our Lions family, having recently joined us this season,” Straeuli said.

“On behalf of our Chairman, Mr Altmann Allers, the board and everyone at the Lions, I extend our deepest sympathies to Maiglin, their young sons Hendrix and Emerson, and the entire Andrews family.

“We stand with them in their sorrow and will remember Hyron with great affection and respect.”

The Lions also appealed for the family’s privacy to be respected as they navigate this incredibly difficult period.

Despite the tragedy, the Johannesburg-based franchise confirmed that the team would honour Andrews by fulfilling its opening Investec Champions Cup fixture against French club La Rochelle on Saturday evening.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 18:30 South African time, with the Lions taking to the field in memory of their late teammate.

The club added that further details regarding an appropriate tribute to Andrews would be communicated in due course.

Andrews’ passing leaves a profound void within the Lions family, with the wider rugby community extending its thoughts and condolences to his wife, children and loved ones during this time of immense grief.

May Hyron Andrews rest in peace.
